ESTCOURT — The weekend brought a storm of weather challenges to KwaZulu-Natal, leaving the N3 route in shambles and traffic at a standstill. Residents and travelers alike faced the brunt of nature's fury as disruptive weather swept across the region. The scene was chaotic, with many motorists caught off guard by the sudden turn of events.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) had sounded the alarm early, issuing a Level 6 warning for a snowstorm in the northern parts of the province and a Level 2 warning for heavy rain. These predictions turned out to be spot-on as the weather system unleashed its full force.
Authorities and Humanitarian Groups Step Up Amidst Crisis
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) made the tough call to close the N3 highway between Estcourt in KwaZulu-Natal and Harrismith in the Free State. The decision came after reports of heavy snowfall blanketed the Van Reenen's and Oliviershoek Pass areas on the R74 route. The situation was dire, and authorities acted swiftly to ensure safety.

According to SAWS, widespread showers and thundershowers were expected, bringing with them disruptive rain and localized flooding. The rainfall accumulation was projected to reach between 40 to 50mm in some areas, extending into Sunday across the northern regions. The icy and wet conditions created a perfect storm of poor visibility and hazardous driving conditions, particularly for those traveling between KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, and the southern parts of Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
With safety as the top priority, the N3TC issued a strong warning to road users, urging them to avoid traveling to the affected areas. Meanwhile, the KZN police department sprang into action, deploying officers to provide much-needed assistance and warm meals to stranded commuters on the N3 between Estcourt and Mooi River.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the provincial police spokesperson, revealed that even some police officers were among those stranded. Despite their own struggles, these officers remained steadfast in their duty, providing security and support to their fellow travelers. In a statement to Briefly News, Netshiunda expressed pride in the officers' dedication:
"Even though they're in the same predicament as everyone else, our officers are out there ensuring the safety of all commuters. It's heartwarming to see them stepping up in such trying times."
Netshiunda further explained that KZN SAPS management had mobilized business partners to prepare food and warm clothing for those trapped in the freezing conditions. "Our police force is working tirelessly alongside other stakeholders to brave the elements and deliver essential aid. It's a true testament to the spirit of collaboration and community support," he added.
Gift of the Givers Steps In to Offer Relief
Ali Sablay, project manager at Gift of the Givers, shared with Briefly News that the humanitarian organization was in constant communication with the Road Traffic Information (RTI), N3TC, pilots, and tow truck companies to coordinate assistance efforts. "We've already loaded our vehicles with necessary supplies and reached out to selected garages and businesses to provide hot drinks and snacks to those in need," Sablay explained.
At a community hall in Estcourt, the team had prepared meals and drinks for passersby, but the demand was growing rapidly. Sablay emphasized the urgency of the situation: "We're receiving countless calls from motorists and their families who are running out of food and water. The cold is biting hard, and blankets are desperately needed. Our primary concern right now is for individuals who require medical evacuations due to the extreme conditions."

Snow Blankets South Africa and Lesotho
In related news, Briefly News reported that South Africa and Lesotho were transformed into a winter wonderland this spring. Massive snowfall covered large parts of the country, leaving many in awe. However, the SAWS has warned that more inclement weather is on the way, advising people to avoid travel altogether.
The snow-covered landscapes might be picturesque, but they pose significant risks to those caught unprepared. As the country braces for further weather disruptions, the efforts of authorities and humanitarian organizations are proving crucial in mitigating the impact of this unexpected springtime blizzard.
