Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has called on law enforcement authorities to expedite their investigation into the devastating loss of three young lives in the Mdantsane area. This heart-wrenching incident has left the community in shock, prompting urgent calls for answers and accountability.

Lithembelihle Bambela, just 4 years old, Iminathi Bambela, a mere 1-year-old, and Live Ndudane, also 1, tragically lost their lives last week. The cause of their deaths is believed to be linked to the consumption of Top Score instant maize porridge. A somber funeral was held for the children on Friday, October 4, where family and friends gathered to honor their precious lives.

Investigation Underway: Premier Calls for Caution

In a moving speech delivered at the children's funeral, Premier Mabuyane emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. He stressed that it would be premature to assign blame to either the product or the retailer at this stage.

  • The porridge in question, manufactured by Namibian company Namib Mills, was purchased from a local Spar outlet. Mabuyane pointed out that if the product or retailer were truly at fault, there would likely be more widespread reports of similar incidents. "If this were a broader issue with the product or store, we’d be seeing an outbreak or other children falling ill. This appears to be an isolated incident," he remarked.

While acknowledging the public's concern and grief, Mabuyane reiterated his belief that neither the retailer nor the product should be prematurely faulted. However, he emphasized the importance of allowing the police to complete their investigation before drawing any conclusions. Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, the product has been recalled from shelves nationwide.

    Porridge Manufacturer Clears Its Name

Namib Mills, the company behind Top Score instant maize porridge, has issued a statement asserting that no evidence has been found linking their product to the tragic deaths. The company remains committed to upholding the highest standards of food safety and is actively cooperating with ongoing investigations.

"We wish to emphasize that, as of this moment, there is no evidence directly connecting our product to this heartbreaking tragedy. At Namib Mills, we take all allegations of food safety extremely seriously," stated senior brand manager Marné Bouwer.

Despite the lack of concrete evidence, Namib Mills has decided to recall the product not only in South Africa but also in neighboring countries such as Namibia, Zambia, and Lesotho. This precautionary step aims to reassure consumers and ensure public safety while investigations continue.

Food Poisoning Concerns: A Wider Issue

    Recent Deaths in Gauteng

In a related development, Briefly News reported a concerning rise in food poisoning cases in Gauteng. Since February 2024, a staggering 10 children have lost their lives due to foodborne illnesses in the province. The alarming trend has drawn attention to the broader issue of food safety, particularly in informal settlements where access to quality food and proper storage facilities may be limited.

According to Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba, the majority of food poisoning cases in the region have been linked to snacks like biscuits and potato chips. These products, often consumed by children, can pose significant risks if stored improperly or if they are past their expiration dates. The health department is urging parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safe food practices.
