It’s a heartbreaking moment for the South African Police Service and the entire police community as they come together to grieve the loss of two officers in a tragic accident. This incident is a stark reminder of the risks faced not only on the job but even during routine travel.

Constable Moloto and data capturer Patience Shingange were among four people who tragically lost their lives in a horrific crash on the R529 road, between Letsitele and Lydenburg. The officers were on a solemn mission, heading to the funeral of a fellow colleague, when this unimaginable tragedy unfolded.

Heartbreaking Details of the Crash

SAPS confirmed that this crash was not just a loss for the police force but for an entire family. Patience Shingange’s 18-year-old daughter and her 70-year-old aunt were also among those who didn’t survive. This Saturday morning, September 21, 2024, will be remembered as a day of immense sorrow when a grey Ford Figo collided with a purple Quantum taxi.

The crash left more than just fatalities; it also injured nine passengers and the taxi driver. Emergency responders worked tirelessly to assist those involved, but the severity of the crash left many with life-changing injuries.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, expressed her deep sorrow and paid tribute to the fallen officers. She emphasized how their absence leaves a profound gap in the community they served so selflessly.

“Their untimely passing leaves an immense void in our hearts and in our community. These individuals dedicated their lives to serving and protecting others, and their legacy will always be remembered,” she said with heavy emotion.

POPCRU Remembers Their Comrades

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) joined in mourning the loss of these officers and their families. In a heartfelt statement to Briefly News, POPCRU Limpopo honored the memory of those who were on their way to bid farewell to another fallen comrade.

“Their commitment to justice and the welfare of others was unwavering. They weren’t just colleagues; they were friends, mentors, and pillars of strength for everyone around them. Their impact on our union will forever be cherished,” the statement read.

“As we mourn, we also celebrate their lives, filled with purpose, bravery, and a relentless pursuit of justice. Their contributions to our mission will continue to guide us as we move forward together,” it continued.

POPCRU extended its deepest condolences to the families of all those lost in the accident, assuring them that their loved ones will never be forgotten.

Another Tragic Weekend Accident

The weekend wasn’t without another devastating road accident that claimed four more lives. This time, it happened on the R40 between Mbombela and Barberton. A collision between an SUV and another vehicle left both cars engulfed in flames.

According to Briefly News, cleanup efforts took an exhausting 10 hours, highlighting the scale of destruction caused by this tragedy. It’s a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and the unpredictable nature of life on South Africa’s roads.
