Why These Best Friends Decided to Leave the Township

Thapelo Makhanya and Nisha recently opened up to Briefly News about their decision to move out. Let’s hear their stories in their own words:

    Makhanya Explains:

“Growing up in the township can sometimes feel like you're stuck in a loop. Nisha and I always dreamed of breaking free and starting fresh in a bigger city. We want to be surrounded by people who inspire us, who push us to chase our dreams and make a real impact. Supporting each other in this journey has been a game-changer for us. Living independently has given me the freedom to make my own choices and take charge of my life. I’m responsible for my space, my finances, and my decisions. It’s empowering.
“Of course, living with family has its perks. There’s a sense of security and comfort that’s hard to replicate. But I chose this path because I wanted to spread my wings, grow, and see life from a new perspective. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.”

    Nisha Weighs In:

“I realized I was feeling trapped in the township. I wanted more opportunities to challenge myself, grow, and become truly independent. Living on my own is a big adjustment. Suddenly, I’m responsible for everything—from paying bills to making sure the fridge stays stocked. It’s a lot, but it’s also helping me grow in ways I never imagined. I’ve learned to rely on myself, and that’s a powerful lesson.”

What to Think About Before Moving Out

Gen Z has been vocal about their struggles with living under their parents’ roofs. Many are determined to break free from generational cycles by moving out early. While the idea of leaving home and living independently might sound exciting, it’s important to consider the financial realities. As Apartment Therapy points out, saving up beforehand is crucial. Costs like rent, utilities, and furniture can add up quickly, so having a solid savings plan is key.

Living independently isn’t just about paying bills; it’s about creating a life that reflects your values and goals. Whether you’re moving out with a roommate or going solo, preparation is everything. A well-stocked savings account can help ease the transition and give you peace of mind.
