In today’s tough South African economy, finding a stable job is no small feat. Many people face significant challenges as unemployment rates soar, but some individuals take matters into their own hands and create opportunities. One such person is David Luzipo, whose inspiring journey from joblessness to running a successful farm is nothing short of remarkable.

In a country where job opportunities are scarce, David Luzipo decided to forge his own path. Instead of waiting for the economy to improve, he chose to follow his passion and make his father's dream of owning a farm a reality. His story is one of determination, resilience, and the power of family legacy.
David's Bold Move: Building a Farm in SA
According to Food For Mzansi, David initially pursued studies in mechatronics engineering and diesel mechanics, hoping to secure a job in his field. However, after months of searching without success, he realized it was time to pivot. With no prospects in sight, David turned to his father’s long-held dream of becoming a farmer—a dream that had been deferred due to family responsibilities. David saw this as an opportunity to honor his father’s wishes while carving out his own future.

David’s father had always dreamed of farming but never had the chance to pursue it. As the primary breadwinner for the family, he prioritized providing for his loved ones over chasing his passions. But David wasn’t about to let that dream die. He made a bold decision to take action, saying, “You know what? Let me start this thing and see how it goes.”
“I made up my mind and made a decision. You know what? Okay, let me start this thing and see how it goes,” David told the publication mentioned above.
That decision paid off. Today, David farms on approximately 200 hectares of land in the rural areas of Nqamakwe, Eastern Cape. His farm specializes in producing fresh produce like cabbages, spinach, and broccoli, supplying some of South Africa’s largest retailers, including Spar, Boxer, Pick n Pay, and Shoprite.
Where It All Began
David’s journey into farming didn’t begin with instant success. In 2015, he worked as a production manager for his friend Greg Williams in the Eastern Cape—unpaid at first. This hands-on experience taught him invaluable skills, from planting and fertilizing to spraying chemicals and harvesting. It wasn’t glamorous work, but it laid the foundation for his future success.
David described his daily routine during those early days: “At 2 a.m. in the morning, I’m out of the house, driving the truck to the farm.” His dedication and willingness to put in the hard work were evident from the start. By 2016, he launched his own project in Mthatha, starting with 120 hectares of land. In 2021, he formalized his operation by establishing the Ayakanda Agricultural Cooperative, named after his grandfather and father.
Of course, the road wasn’t easy. David faced numerous challenges, including financial strain, which forced him to dip into his father’s retirement funds. But through sheer perseverance and determination, he overcame these obstacles. Today, his business boasts a diverse client base, and he’s well on his way to achieving his goal of becoming the "youngest and most productive farmer in the Eastern Cape."
