LIMPOPO – The streets of Limpopo are buzzing after the South African Police Service (SAPS) made headlines with the arrest of four foreign nationals suspected of engaging in illegal activities. This operation has sparked heated discussions across social media platforms.
The South African Police Service uncovered what they believe to be an illegal gold processing laboratory during routine operations in the province. On Saturday, February 8, 2025, police officers conducting the Vala Umgodi operation stumbled upon the lab in the Mopani District, leading to the arrest of four suspects.
Uncovering the Operation: Officers Seize Evidence and Arrest Key Players
In a well-coordinated operation, law enforcement officers discovered the lab on a compound farm near Tarentaalrand. Inside, they found a variety of items used for the illegal processing of minerals, including containers filled with carbon ashes, oxygen cylinders, gas bottles, and sulfuric acid. This discovery sheds light on the extent of the illegal activities taking place in the area.

The four suspects, aged between 35 and 46, were apprehended during the raid. They are set to face charges for illegal processing of gold-bearing materials and violations of the Immigration Act. Two of the arrested individuals are believed to be the masterminds behind the operation, orchestrating the illegal activities from the shadows.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba spoke with Briefly News to confirm the ongoing investigation. He assured the public that further updates would be provided as more information becomes available. Later, Ledwaba identified the suspects as Jojn Vondo (Zimbabwean, 39), Hardlife Manjoko (Zimbabwean, 35), Biggie Chimwero (Zimbabwean, 36), and Samuel Almeida Mashaba (Mozambican, 46).

Public Reaction: South Africans Voice Their Concerns
The news of the arrests didn't sit well with many South Africans, who took to social media to express their frustrations. The involvement of foreigners in illegal activities continues to be a contentious issue in the country, sparking debates about border control and immigration policies.
God-frey Mokgonyana voiced his concern, saying:
“These foreign nationals take our country for granted, seriously. It’s time we start addressing these issues head-on.”
@twickenham48 added:
“Note it says foreign nationals. This is the direct result of our porous borders and the lack of proper immigration control. We need to take action before it gets worse.”
@DreamerSib expressed disbelief:

“Only in South Africa. Our intelligence seems to be lacking. Foreigners are practically running amok, doing as they please without consequence.”
@Taudiyarora_70 joked about the situation:
“Please, the kingpin must not vanish in the hands of the SAPS just like what happened in Stilfontein 🤣😂😅. We need to keep an eye on these cases.”
Related Developments: SAPS Dismantles Drug Lab in Gauteng
In a separate but equally significant development, SAPS in Gauteng dismantled a drug lab estimated to be worth R4.5 million on December 20, 2024. During the raid, officers discovered machines used to manufacture drugs, but no suspects were found on the premises.
According to Briefly News, citizens believe the suspects may have been tipped off about the impending police raid. This raises questions about the level of coordination and intelligence sharing within law enforcement agencies and the need for stricter measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
