- The Kaizer Chiefs sporting director believes his club’s reputation plays a significant role in negotiations
- Fans weigh in on Motaung Jr's comments about inflated player valuations due to Kaizer Chiefs' involvement
Kaizer Motaung Jr has chimed in on a growing concern in the Premier Soccer League (PSL): clubs allegedly hiking transfer fees when Kaizer Chiefs express interest in their players. It's a topic that's sparking debate among fans and analysts alike.
This summer, the Glamour Boys have been making waves in the transfer market, bringing in seven new signings, including Tunisian midfielder Nasreddine Nabi. However, despite their aggressive pursuit of talent, the Soweto giants missed out on a few targets, even after submitting offers they believed were fair.

What Motaung Jr Has to Say About Rising Prices
In an exclusive interview with Thabiso Mosia on Radio2000, as reported by iDiskiTimes, Motaung Jr opened up about how some clubs inflate transfer fees when Kaizer Chiefs come knocking. The situation has become particularly evident in their ongoing negotiations with Cape Town Spurs for midfielder Asanele Velebayi.

According to Motaung Jr, the player’s valuation seems to skyrocket simply because it involves the Soweto giants. "To be fair, it is the case," the sporting director admitted. "There are certain instances where it's market-related, and we've dealt very well with some clubs who've been realistic. At the end of the day, it's give and take. Everyone has to place a value on what they think a product is worth—if I can put it that way. It's just business, I guess."
He went on to emphasize the importance of building strong relationships within the league. "It's for us, navigating the best way we can, forming good relationships—we also want to have good relationships with all the PSL teams, not just pay for things," Motaung Jr explained.
Fans React to Motaung Jr's Comments
The sporting director's remarks have sparked a lively discussion on social media, with fans sharing their thoughts on the matter:
"Lol why do they claim to be a 'big FC' if they only make a budget provision of R7m to sign new players every season? You should have told him to move with the times, clubs are within their rights to ask for what they think their players are worth," said Siphe_Sihle.
UTD_Carterx chimed in, writing, "Exactly what it feels like. The same thing I think happens for clubs overseas such as United. They’re taxing because of the name and status."
"I think Kaizer Chiefs should go to the market for the player they want and need for the team. They must pay for what is being asked for such a player! Telling supporters that clubs are not eager to sell players to Chiefs is not acceptable at all," Nelson_Simon19 commented.
James682286761 shared his perspective, stating, "Indeed clubs must make profits for discovering players. All the professional teams must have vigorous scouting teams that can identify a hidden gem from KZN, EC, WC, MP, NC, NW—even in Lesotho or along the Zambezi River. Not having a clear strategy can be the detriment of a team."
siyandda responded, "They clearly do not understand simple economics at that club. Everyone is charged according to how much they can afford. They are charged fair value at their level of economic affordability. Kaiser Chiefs inflation is real, and is fair."
MxolisiMjt added, "That's what their fans also say to console themselves. They don't wanna face the reality which is 'chiefs can't negotiate.' They come with this mentality of 'players want to play for their club.' If so, then why don't they get players abroad or they're also over-quoted?"

Nabi Urges Fans to Be 'Realistic'
Briefly News reported earlier that Nasreddine Nabi called on Kaizer Chiefs fans to be 'realistic' as the club prepares for the 2024/2025 season. The Tunisian coach emphasized that his focus is on building a strong, competitive squad. He reminded fans that they shouldn't expect immediate success, especially after the club's disappointing tenth-place finish in the PSL last season.
As the transfer window continues, all eyes will be on Kaizer Chiefs and how they navigate these challenges. One thing is certain: the club's decisions will be closely scrutinized by fans and critics alike.
