The game started off promisingly for Stellenbosch when Lehlohonolo Mojelo netted a stunning goal in the first 12 minutes, giving them an early lead. But the Pirates weren't about to let that stand. In a post-match interview reported by Soccer Laduma, Barker expressed his frustration over what he sees as a series of blunders by the referee. He specifically highlighted the second goal scored by Pirates' Tshegofatso Mabasa, which he believes was marred by three critical errors. The coach explained that the decision-making process during this pivotal moment overshadowed the otherwise brilliant performances from both teams.

Barker lamented that the match's narrative has now shifted away from the skill and tactics on display, focusing instead on the referee's decisions. "Unfortunately, on Monday night, when it should be about the match and how it was played, and the good tactics of each team, the competitors of each team, it's going to be about a refereeing decision," he remarked. His disappointment was palpable as he elaborated on the three errors: "Firstly, it wasn't a free-kick; secondly, the referee was distracted while talking to the players; thirdly, the free-kick was taken from the wrong spot. There is nothing else to say; there's nothing more."
