Anderson Cooper’s Take: The DA Leader’s Spicy Response To The EFF
- DA leader John Steenhuisen is not holding back after the EFF made some bold claims.
- The EFF declared they'd hold the Agriculture Minister accountable for his alleged misconduct.
- In response, Steenhuisen extended an invitation to educate EFF members about Parliament, expressing sympathy for their lack of understanding.

Listen up, because this is juicy. John Steenhuisen, the leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), has decided it’s time to lay down the law after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) lodged a complaint against him with Parliament’s ethics committee. Picture this: the EFF, clad in their signature red berets, stepping into the ring to call out what they see as misconduct. But Steenhuisen isn’t backing down. Instead, he’s firing back with a zinger that might just leave the EFF scratching their heads.
Here’s the backstory: the EFF accused the Agriculture Minister of trying to hire unqualified individuals for key positions. Steenhuisen, who happens to be the Agriculture Minister in question, wanted to waive the minimum appointment requirements so he could bring four people onto his team. However, Parliament wasn’t having it and shot down his request. Now, the EFF is using this as ammunition to take a swing at Steenhuisen.
Steenhuisen Takes Aim at the EFF
At a recent press conference, where Steenhuisen outlined the DA’s priorities in the GNU’s Medium-Term Development Plan, he couldn’t resist addressing the EFF’s accusations. He didn’t just respond—he schooled them. Literally.

“Now I feel very sorry for the EFF, and in fact, I am going to make a very broad and generous offer today because they really are a terrible opposition,” Steenhuisen said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
“As a former Chief Whip in Parliament, I am going to sit down with some of them and explain to them how parliament works,” he added, extending what he called a "generous offer."
Steenhuisen went on to clarify that if the EFF truly believed a minister was being dishonest in a parliamentary reply, the ethics committee wasn’t the place to file their complaint. Instead, they should bring it to the Public Protector’s office. He offered to personally guide the EFF through the proper channels, though he wasn’t entirely optimistic about their ability to learn.
“I am very happy to help and school the EFF in that particular regard. But some of them are frankly beyond help,” Steenhuisen remarked, attributing their struggles to a "failed education system." Ouch.
Steenhuisen Under Fire for Cadre Deployment
What’s the Buzz Around Cadre Deployment?
But let’s not forget, Steenhuisen isn’t just dealing with the EFF’s accusations. Earlier, South Africans were up in arms about his proposal to bypass minimum requirements for appointments. Many criticized him for what they saw as cadre deployment—a term often used to describe the practice of appointing loyalists rather than qualified candidates. The controversy arose when Steenhuisen attempted to appoint four individuals to his office, despite their lack of qualifications for the roles.
This move sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that it undermined the integrity of the hiring process. Steenhuisen, however, defended his decision, emphasizing the need for flexibility in building his team. Nevertheless, Parliament ultimately rejected his request, leaving him to navigate the fallout from both the public and political opponents like the EFF.
So, as the dust settles, it seems like Steenhuisen is not only defending his actions but also taking the opportunity to educate—or perhaps entertain—his critics. Will the EFF take him up on his offer? Or will they continue to spar from the sidelines? Only time will tell.
