MPUMALANGA — Officers in Kinross, a quiet gold mining town near Secunda, faced an intense confrontation when they shut down a tavern during a routine patrol. What started as a standard operation quickly spiraled into chaos. The incident highlights the growing tension between law enforcement and certain communities in the region.
It’s not the first time police vehicles and personnel have been targeted in Mpumalanga. This alarming trend is raising concerns about public safety and the protection of state resources. Let’s dive deeper into what happened that fateful morning.
When Routine Patrol Turned Hostile
It was just before dawn on Sunday, January 26, 2025, when members of the Visible Policing unit arrived at a tavern in Kinross. Around 3:45 a.m., the officers noticed the establishment was still open, violating local regulations. After speaking with the owner, who agreed to close, the situation took an unexpected turn.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, the owner began asking patrons to leave. That’s when a man allegedly caused damage to a police van outside. Officers intervened, but things escalated quickly. “When they tried to arrest the suspect, a scuffle broke out,” Mdhluli explained. “The man reportedly attempted to grab a police firearm, sparking a chaotic scene.”
“It was a tense moment. A group of patrons joined in, attempting to overpower the officers and seize their service pistols. Despite the odds, the officers managed to maintain control and call for backup.”
During the struggle, a gunshot accidentally discharged, injuring a civilian in the leg. Thankfully, none of the officers sustained injuries. However, the patrol car suffered significant damage, including a shattered windshield, dented body panels, and punctured tires.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway, alongside an inquiry by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) regarding the shooting. So far, no arrests have been made. Authorities remain hopeful that further evidence will lead to justice.
A Pattern of Violence Against State Resources
This incident isn’t isolated. Just days earlier, on January 18, 2025, a police van in Thulamahashe, Bushbuckridge, was set ablaze in broad daylight. The suspected arsonist, known to authorities as a repeat offender, was swiftly apprehended. Acting Provincial Commissioner Maj-Gen Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned such acts of hostility.
Mkhwanazi praised the officers involved for their composure under immense pressure. “Their professionalism and ability to de-escalate the situation are commendable,” he remarked. However, he expressed deep concern over the increasing disregard for essential resources that serve the community.
“The public must recognize the importance of protecting state resources. These tools and vehicles are vital for delivering essential services. Any attempt to damage them harms not only law enforcement but the entire community.”
Mkhwanazi urged citizens to report suspicious behavior and work alongside authorities to foster safer neighborhoods. “Together, we can build a culture of respect and accountability,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, the city center continues to grapple with alarming levels of violence. A recent CCTV video captured a chilling scene at a tavern in the Central Business District (CBD). The footage illustrates the alarming frequency of shootings, many of which prove fatal.
This incident in Kinross serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement across South Africa. As tensions rise, it’s crucial for communities and authorities to collaborate in finding lasting solutions.
