FORT HARE — The Makhanda High Court handed down a series of life sentences to three men who were found guilty of brutally murdering two professors from the University of Fort Hare. The court also convicted them of additional serious offenses, including housebreaking, robbery, and rape, ensuring they will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
On September 18, the court added an additional 60 years to their sentences, making it clear that justice had been served. These men won’t see the light of day for a very long time, if ever.
Justice Served: Trio Receives Seven Life Sentences
This case dates back to September 30, 2022, when Silindokuhle Mangali and siblings Wanda and Sakhele Limba broke into the home of a couple living in Hogsback. What happened next was nothing short of horrifying. The trio assaulted Fabien Genin, who was 51 years old, stabbing him and tying him up. Then, they turned their attention to Judith Masters, 67, raping her before ultimately strangling her to death. It was a brutal, senseless crime that shocked the entire community.

During the sentencing, State Advocate Andile Nohiya spoke passionately about the severity of the crimes. A post-mortem examination revealed the sheer brutality of the attack, with both victims suffering severe injuries. Nohiya emphasized the importance of justice being served, not just for the victims but for the entire community.
"Their actions show a shocking disregard for human life and have deeply impacted the community. It is crucial that justice prevails," Nohiya stated firmly.
Luxolo Tyali, the regional spokesperson for the Eastern Cape National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), echoed these sentiments. He explained that the verdict sends a strong message to would-be criminals that such acts will not be tolerated.
The court sentenced Silindokuhle Mangali, who is 22 years old, to three life sentences and an additional 20 years in prison. His co-defendants, Wanda Limba, 30, and Sakhele Limba, 34, were each sentenced to two life sentences plus 20 years in prison. These sentences reflect the gravity of their crimes and the need for justice.
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Barry Madolo welcomed the verdict, calling it a significant victory for justice. "This sentence demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting society's most vulnerable members. It also serves as a powerful deterrent to anyone considering committing similar crimes. The community can rest assured that justice will always prevail," Madolo declared.

In another case, two men accused of robbing and killing a 60-year-old pensioner in Engcobo near Mthatha were also sentenced to life in prison. The Mthatha High Court found Mbongeni Sandile and Ayanda Wahlinzwa guilty of not only robbery and murder but also kidnapping. The victims’ family and the community have expressed relief that justice has been done.
On April 16, 2022, the victim, Monwabisi Mkhondweni, visited a local tavern in Nkondlo village. Little did he know that his life would be cut tragically short that day. The court's decision to impose life sentences on the perpetrators underscores the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that such crimes do not go unpunished.
