  • Just days ago, a TikTok video went viral after a young woman claimed she found bits of a rodent in her SASKO loaf of bread.
  • Briefly News reached out to the bread company to get their side of the story and hear what they had to say about the viral TikTok post.
  • After reviewing the footage, SASKO concluded that what appeared to be rodent parts was actually burnt dough—a rare but harmless occurrence during the baking process.

When a second Gauteng resident claimed she found something disturbing in her bread, it sparked a wave of concern among consumers. Many people began questioning the quality and safety of the bread company involved. That’s why Briefly News decided to step in and ask SASKO directly about the situation.

What Did SASKO Have to Say About the Rodent Claims?

On September 19, Briefly News got in touch with SASKO, sharing the TikTok video posted by Gauteng resident Andile Malope (@andilemalope_13). In the video, Malope showed viewers what she believed to be evidence of a rodent in the final slice of her bread. Let’s take a look at the clip she shared:

Clare O'Donovan, a partner at the public relations firm FleishmanHillard, delivered SASKO's official response to the allegations:

  • "We’re aware of the incident raised by Andile Malope and have been in communication with her regarding the matter. Food safety and quality are top priorities for us, and we’re committed to addressing any issues thoroughly."
"Regrettably, we couldn’t inspect the sample because the consumer had already thrown it away."

The company went on to clarify the situation:

"Upon reviewing the media material shared, our quality assurance team determined that the darkened areas were not rodent parts but rather burnt dough. This can occasionally happen during the baking process when small pieces of dough stick to the pan from a previous batch and are rebaked with the new one. While rare, these instances don’t pose any health risks to consumers."

They further explained that such occurrences result in darker spots within the bread but are entirely harmless. To reassure customers, they added:

"Please note that any reports suggesting a recall of SASKO products are false. We can confirm with certainty that no recall has been issued, and all of our products continue to meet the highest standards of safety and quality."

This isn’t the first time someone has raised concerns about finding foreign objects in SASKO bread. Earlier, on August 31, Nombulelo Mkumla from KwaZulu-Natal made headlines after claiming she found a rat in her loaf of bread.

Mkumla took to Facebook to share her experience, revealing that she received a response from SASKO on September 7. However, she expressed frustration with the company’s explanation, feeling it fell short of addressing her concerns adequately.

As the conversation around food safety continues, both SASKO and its customers are reminded of the importance of open communication and transparency. Whether it’s burnt dough or something more concerning, trust between brands and consumers remains key to resolving disputes like this one.
