CAPE TOWN - In a dramatic showdown, seven suspected extortionists traveling in a mini-bus taxi clashed with police in the Du Noon area. The confrontation escalated into a high-speed chase involving police vehicles, culminating in a deadly shootout. Three suspects were killed, while four others were wounded and apprehended.

The four suspects who suffered gunshot injuries during the violent encounter around 2 PM on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, were taken into custody and are currently hospitalized under police supervision.

What Happened During the Shootout?

Colonel Andre Traut, a spokesperson for the police, recounted the events, stating that the suspects were initially spotted fleeing the Du Noon area. The chase intensified on Bosmansdam Road when the suspects began firing at two pursuing police vehicles using an assault rifle. This aggressive act left officers no choice but to defend themselves.

  • Bongani Maqhashalala, head of Western Cape Crime Detection, provided further details:

    "A fierce exchange of gunfire occurred during the pursuit, until the mini-bus lost control, crashing into a tree. Our combat team, highly trained and prepared, emerged unscathed. We recovered the vehicle, an AK-47 assault rifle, a handgun, and a significant amount of cash."

    The injured suspects are receiving medical treatment but remain under constant police supervision.

    Briefly News reported that in a separate incident, police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested four suspected extortionists after a shootout. The confrontation took place at a construction site in Sydenham when a private security company responded to an emergency call. The suspects, aged 38 and 48, will face charges once discharged from the hospital.
