PRETORIA — Dr Johnstone Makhubu, the esteemed Deputy Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, recently graduated with a PhD in Leadership from the University of Pretoria. His research primarily investigates leadership dynamics within multi-actor groups and how leaders can collaborate effectively in these complex settings.

Exploring Relational Leadership and Trust in Multi-Actor Groups

In an exclusive interview with Briefly News, Dr Makhubu discussed his doctoral research titled Relational Leadership and Trust in Multi-Actor Groups. Guided by his PhD coach and advisor, Dr Sandra Steyn, and under the supervision of Professors Derick de Jongh and Yolande Steenkamp, Makhubu meticulously explored the intricacies of leadership within collaborative frameworks.

  • Through his research, Makhubu uncovered that leaders, particularly those in public institutions like the Government of National Unity, require essential elements such as utility, reciprocity, legitimacy, and commonalities to thrive. He explained how these principles can significantly impact the success or failure of such leadership formations.

"Imagine a scenario where multiple apex leaders come together to achieve a common goal, much like the Government of National Unity. In these cases, understanding relational leadership and trust becomes crucial. My research provides valuable insights into why and how such collaborations succeed or falter," Makhubu told Briefly News.

Makhubu's findings advocate for a shift from individualistic leadership to more collective approaches, aligning with the evolving leadership models seen in the Government of National Unity, as well as Provincial and Local Unity governments.

    Revolutionizing Leadership for Africa

Dr Makhubu also elaborated on how his research resonates with the philosophy of the Albert Luthuli Leadership Institute, which underscores leadership in context, development, and accountability.

"Leadership, in my view, is not just about one person at the helm. It's about the interactions and communications among social beings. It's a dynamic process that thrives on social engagements involving multiple stakeholders," he explained.
"This perspective moves away from the celebrity leader model and emphasizes the importance of social interactions and processes in defining leadership. In a post-state capture era, where trust between public institutions and society needs to be rebuilt, this approach is vital," he added.
