Let me tell you something real quick. Pitso Mosimane, the legendary South African coach, recently dropped some interesting thoughts about the three powerhouses of the Betway Premiership: Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates. Now, Pitso didn’t hold back, especially when it came to his former club, Sundowns. This guy’s got a way of saying things that make you stop and think, and his latest comments are no exception.

If you remember, Mosimane recently parted ways with Iranian club Esteghlal due to some contractual disputes. Now back home in South Africa, he’s been opening up about the state of the Betway Premiership and the coaches leading the charge at these iconic clubs. It’s always fascinating to hear what Pitso has to say because he’s never one to mince words.

Mosimane Takes Aim at Sundowns While Praising Chiefs and Pirates

According to GOAL, Mosimane had a candid conversation with 5FM radio presenter Xoli Zondo, where he shared his thoughts on the current coaching setups at Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. When it came to Pirates, Mosimane had nothing but praise for Jose Riveiro, calling him a fantastic coach who’s on a winning streak. “Orlando Pirates has a very good coach, fantastic, on a roll, we should not disturb them,” he said.

  • On the other hand, his take on Kaizer Chiefs was a bit more nuanced. He acknowledged that Nasreddine Nabi, the current Chiefs coach, is putting in the effort, but he’s not entirely convinced. “Kaizer Chiefs, ok, Nabi is trying to do something, he’s getting there. He’s not really convincing, I guess he’s trying his best,” Mosimane admitted.

But the real kicker came when he talked about his former team, Mamelodi Sundowns. While praising their current success, Mosimane couldn’t resist taking a subtle dig. “The billionaires are good, they can always buy anybody, anything, and they can buy Pep [Guardiola] if they want. So they don’t need help,” he quipped.

He then went on to reflect on his legacy at Sundowns, saying, “I’m happy that we have left them at a better place and look how they are doing. I’m proud to look back, you know when somebody says ‘Ah there was a mess’ and I had to sort it out? There’s no mess I left there. I left trophies.”

Social Media Reactions to Mosimane’s Comments

Of course, Mosimane’s words didn’t go unnoticed. Fans and analysts alike took to social media to weigh in on his remarks. Williams, a fan, hilariously pointed out the billionaire status of Sundowns. “The billionaires are good 💀💀💀💀 He knows with money, you get everything... and he also said anyone can coach Sundowns, which is true. He sees the work of Pirates coach but when it comes to Sundowns he says the truth, MONEY. Imagine a club having spent over R450m to buy players, what do you expect, worse playing for a league prize of R20m😩😩😩😩😩🥹🥹🥹 Mad business indeed... Pitso is right to call them billionaires.”

Another user, T_touch, joked about Mosimane’s focus on finances rather than coaching quality. “For Sundowns he didn’t rate the coach, he rated the finances. 😂”

MaraDinho_10 chimed in with a reminder of Mosimane’s own early struggles at Sundowns. “Jingles himself wasn’t convincing in his first 6 months at Downs, he knows that. The hype around Nabi killed him before he even started but at least now we know his level (not convincing).”

  • Not everyone agreed with Mosimane’s take, though. Nic_thwala defended Sundowns, saying, “We’ll forever be grateful for his contributions at Mamelodi Sundowns.. but I do not think we should attribute Sundowns success only to money .. also the human resources there is top 🔝 notch.”

AyeeNdeM questioned the fairness of comparing Nabi and Riveiro. “Was Pitso convincing at Sundowns from his first season? It’s totally unfair for Pitso to compare Pirates coach and Chiefs coach as the Pirates coach has been with the club for some time, Nabi hasn’t even finished a season at Chiefs!”

Eric Gum added an interesting perspective, noting the irony in Mosimane’s focus on finances. “Interesting that now Pitso mentions finances when it comes to Sundowns. Yet while he was the coach he would attack fiercely anyone mentioning the possibility of a big budget assisting him in getting players. We live in interesting times.”

While Mosimane was dishing out comments, he also received some heat from former Al Ahly player Mahmoud Kahraba. As reported by Briefly News, Kahraba wasn’t too pleased with how Mosimane treated him during their time together at the Egyptian club. Despite his impressive performances, Kahraba felt overlooked and undervalued under Mosimane’s leadership. It just goes to show that even legends aren’t immune to criticism, and sometimes the players they coach have their own stories to tell.
