BLOEMFONTEIN — It’s a story that sends chills down your spine. Police have detained a man suspected of fatally shooting his girlfriend and her one-year-old child in Bloemfontein. The horrifying incident unfolded after a heated argument between the couple.
According to police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle, the tragedy took place on Sunday, September 8, following an intense argument between the couple. This wasn’t just any argument; it spiraled out of control, culminating in a tragic and irreversible outcome.
Tragedy Strikes: A Mother and Her Child Laid to Rest
"They arrived at the girlfriend's home and entered her room. The woman's mother, who was at home at the time, tried to step in and diffuse the situation. However, the argument persisted, and she [the mother] fled to a neighbor's house for help," Earle explained.
When the mother returned around 7:00 a.m., she was greeted by a horrifying sight. She heard gunshots and rushed inside to find her daughter, a 35-year-old woman, and her one-year-old grandson lying in a pool of blood. It’s a scene that no parent should ever have to witness.

"The suspect fled the scene immediately after the shooting," Earle stated.
"Police and emergency service personnel were called to the scene, where they confirmed that both victims had tragically passed away."
"An investigation team, led by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit, immediately launched a manhunt to track down the suspect," Earle added.
The relentless pursuit paid off as the man was eventually located and arrested in Botshabelo, a town roughly 50 kilometers from Bloemfontein, on the same day.
"The suspect's brother was found in possession of the alleged murder weapon and was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm," Earle revealed.
"The suspect, aged 38, and his 33-year-old brother are scheduled to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, September 10, where they will face charges of murder," Earle concluded.
