In KwaZulu-Natal, SAPS Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has announced plans to ramp up police presence in Pietermaritzburg. As crime continues to escalate in the area, the move aims to address growing concerns about safety and security among residents. This proactive approach reflects Mkhwanazi’s commitment to making the province safer for everyone.

Could More Police Officers Make a Difference?

According to a report by SABC News, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi cited the alarming rise in crime as the primary reason for increasing the number of officers and establishing additional police stations in Pietermaritzburg. One of the areas flagged for immediate attention is Plessislaer, which has seen a surge in violent crimes like robbery and murder. To tackle this issue, Mkhwanazi has submitted a formal request to higher authorities for reinforcements. He also emphasized the need for more satellite stations to improve coverage and response times.

  • In explaining the rationale behind the request, Mkhwanazi stated, “When you have unity on the ground, it’s simply not enough. That’s why we’re appealing to the head office to enhance capacity in this area. Right now, we’re conducting studies to delineate the region and develop neighboring stations to better serve the community.” This strategic approach underscores the importance of collaboration and thorough planning in addressing complex challenges like crime.

“When you have the unity on the ground, it is not the same, so that is why we are pleading with the head office to increase the capacity in this area. But for now we have the study to demarcate the area, to develop the neighbouring stations,” he said.

    UNISA’s Expert Weighs In

Tinyiku Ngoveni, the Chair of the Department of Criminology and Security Science at UNISA’s School of Criminal Justice, shared his thoughts with Briefly News. Ngoveni acknowledged the potential benefits of increasing police stations but stressed the importance of conducting a comprehensive feasibility study before moving forward. He explained, “In any decision, there are pros and cons. While the idea of expanding police stations is commendable, it must be grounded in data. A detailed analysis comparing the current radius of existing stations with the geographical layout of the area is crucial.”

Ngoveni further elaborated on the possible outcomes of such a move. He noted that adding more police stations could encourage citizens to report crimes more readily, knowing they have access to nearby facilities. Moreover, increased visibility through patrols could deter criminal activities, particularly those involving direct contact, such as robbery. However, he cautioned that implementing these changes might take time. As a stopgap measure, he suggested intensifying special operations with support from officers stationed elsewhere.

“In everything, there are advantages and disadvantages. For this call, the idea might be important, but a feasible study on the increase of police stations must be conducted first while taking into consideration the radius of the current police stations versus the geographical map,” he said.
“The increase in police stations might also motivate citizens to see it fit to report crimes to the police stations that are closer to them. There is a likelihood that crimes such as robbery and other contact crimes might decrease with the additional police officers, especially having more visible police on the ground making patrol. Since the process might take long to implement, I suggest that special operations be emphasized with the support of other police officers from other stations.”

    Public Applauds Mkhwanazi’s Leadership

The public response to Mkhwanazi’s proposal has been overwhelmingly positive. On social media platforms like Facebook, users have voiced their approval and admiration for his leadership. Many see his initiatives as a step in the right direction toward combating crime and fostering safer communities.

Bongaz Khumalo expressed her confidence in Mkhwanazi’s vision, saying, “Mkhwanazi is walking the talk.” Another user, Thembalekhaya Frank Mankayi, echoed similar sentiments, urging him to bring his expertise to the Eastern Cape. Lindoh Mlindoos praised the initiative, suggesting that commissioners in other provinces should adopt similar strategies. Lavan Lavi Naville highlighted an additional benefit of hiring more officers, noting that it could help alleviate unemployment issues. Meanwhile, Thaps’n Thaps expressed optimism about the country’s progress, stating, “I think this country is coming alright bit by bit.”

“It will also solve the unemployment problems at the same time. He makes sense every time.”
“I think this country is coming alright bit by bit.”

Mkhwanazi Sends a Clear Message to Criminals

In a related development, Briefly News reported that Mkhwanazi issued a stern warning to criminals who dare to fire at police officers. His message came after an incident in KwaZulu-Natal where law enforcement officers fatally shot suspects who had opened fire on them upon announcing their presence. Mkhwanazi made it clear that any criminal who chooses to engage police with gunfire will face the consequences. “If they shoot at us, we will shoot back,” he declared, reinforcing the resolve of the police force to protect both themselves and the public.
