SAP Traffic Officials Arrested In Bribery Scandal On N1 Highway
- Eleven traffic officials were arrested by the SAPS after being accused of accepting bribes from bus operators, taxi drivers, and motorists.
- The alleged bribery occurred along the N1 motorway between Polokwane and Musina.
- These officials have been under investigation since March 2022 as part of an undercover operation codenamed 'Coconut.'

POLOKWANE - In a major crackdown on corruption, the Road Traffic Management Anti-Corruption Unit (NTACU), in collaboration with the South African Police Services, arrested 11 traffic officers in Polokwane on September 6, 2024. This operation has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the extent of bribery allegations affecting the N1 highway.
During a joint operation, authorities uncovered that traffic officers stationed along the N1 highway were engaging in corrupt practices. These officers, who were supposed to ensure road safety and enforce traffic laws, allegedly took bribes instead of issuing fines when they discovered faults with vehicles or driver's licenses.
According to reports, officers from nearby towns and villages would abandon their regular duties to head to the N1, seeking opportunities to "earn" extra cash on the side. This behavior not only compromised their integrity but also jeopardized public safety on one of the country's busiest highways.

The investigation began in March 2022 as part of an undercover operation authorized by the Director of Public Prosecutions. This operation aimed to uncover, prevent, and address criminal activities such as bribery. Thanks to the entrapment authorization, investigators were able to gather substantial evidence against the accused officials.
@DDT_PM voiced strong opinions on social media, emphasizing the need for accountability:

@Lethama65968810 shared images of overloaded vehicles commonly seen on the N1:
@nkulipp demanded that the faces of the accused officials be revealed:
"Show us their faces, we want to see those criminals. Accountability starts with transparency!"
@MagnificentSha5, a frequent traveler on the N1, described his experiences with corrupt practices:
"They overlook the spike syndicates on that stretch of road. I drive to Polokwane often, and the only spot I get stopped is after Kranskop Toll Plaza. It's frustrating to know this is happening."

"They must go to Bedfordview. On the corner of Smith Road and Sovereign Street, two cops are busy asking for bribes every day. This isn't just an N1 problem—it's everywhere."
Traffic Officers Gone Wrong: A Closer Look
While the recent arrests highlight the darker side of law enforcement, it’s worth remembering that not all traffic officers behave this way. Most are hardworking individuals dedicated to keeping our roads safe. However, when corruption takes root, it erodes trust and undermines public confidence in the system.
The N1 highway is a vital artery connecting major cities in South Africa, so maintaining its integrity is crucial. The arrests serve as a wake-up call for both the authorities and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. It’s about ensuring that those entrusted with enforcing the law do so fairly and impartially.
