Here we go again. King Monada, the South African music sensation, finds himself in hot water with yet another event organizer. This time, it's Limpopo-based impresario Eric Thoka, who’s had enough of Monada’s no-show antics. Thoka decided to take legal action after the musician failed to honor a booking for a music festival.
Why Is Eric Thoka Taking Legal Action Against King Monada?
It’s becoming a recurring issue. King Monada, the talented South African music producer, seems to be attracting more than just fans these days—event promoters are lining up to air their grievances. According to Sunday World, Eric Thoka, a Limpopo-based event promoter, has taken the drastic step of dragging King Monada into court. The reason? Monada didn’t show up for a music festival booked for New Year's Day in 2023. Thoka claims that not only did Monada fail to appear, but he also refused to return the money paid for his performance.
Thoka explained the situation in detail, stating that King Monada, known for his hit song Malwedhe, didn’t just miss the gig; he didn’t even attempt to refund the money. Instead, the promoter was left holding the bag after paying a whopping R49,000 for the performance. The lawsuit, as detailed in the summons, lays it all out: "To the sheriff or his deputy, inform King Monada Music that Monate Africa hereby institutes action against the defendant in which action the plaintiff claims the relief on the grounds set out in the particulars of claim attached hereto."

Thoka shared the steps he took before resorting to legal action. He recounted the events leading up to the lawsuit: "On the day he was due to perform, we called him to find out his whereabouts. He replied that he was in Pretoria, apparently attending another gig, and promised to come to our show on time. Later, he phoned me and said he came to the show but didn’t find us, but that was a lie. We were there, waiting for him. When we asked for a refund, he suggested we organize another show for him. We refused, telling him that’s not how we do business and insisted on a refund."
"But after several months of not getting our money, we decided to go the legal route. And when we saw stories involving other artists like Mashabela, we realized we weren’t alone. We needed to take a stand and stop this behavior."
What’s Happening in the South African Music Scene?
The South African music scene is buzzing with these kinds of controversies. Artists are under scrutiny for their professionalism—or lack thereof. It’s not just King Monada; other artists are also facing similar issues. For instance, Babes Wodumo recently left her fans and event organizers fuming after failing to show up for a gig at Amigo’s Bar and Grill in Randburg.
Patrons who attended the event were left disappointed, having traveled long distances and waited all night for Babes Wodumo to appear. Unfortunately, she never showed up, offering no explanation for her absence. The organizers slammed her, saying it was unprofessional and disrespectful to the fans who had eagerly anticipated her performance.
Is This Trend Becoming the New Normal?
The music industry is evolving rapidly, and with it, the expectations of both artists and fans are changing. However, professionalism remains a key ingredient for success. As more artists face legal action and public backlash, it’s crucial for them to reflect on their commitments and honor their promises. Fans deserve better, and so do the hardworking event organizers who invest time, money, and effort into making these events happen.
For now, all eyes are on King Monada and how he’ll handle this latest legal challenge. Will he step up and address the concerns of his promoters and fans, or will this be another bump in the road for his career? Only time will tell.
