Listen up, folks. The ANC has officially thrown its support behind Dr. Nasiphi Moya, who is currently the Acting Mayor of the City of Tshwane. This move comes after Cilliers Brink was ousted from his position via a no-confidence motion. Dr. Moya has been leading the city in an interim capacity, and now the ANC sees her as the right person to take the reins permanently.

In preparation for the official council meeting where the new mayor will be elected, the ANC has confirmed that they will fully back Moya's nomination. This is no small gesture, considering the political dynamics at play in Tshwane.

Press Briefing: ANC Spells Out Its Plans

At a recent press briefing, ANC National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri laid out their strategy. She explained that they’ve been in deep discussions with all parties in Tshwane, aiming to find common ground for both political and administrative stability. The region has faced challenges for the past eight years, and the ANC wants to change that narrative by restoring reliable service delivery.

  • Bhengu-Motsiri emphasized that the ANC wasn’t interested in ultimatums or rigid demands. This was a clear dig at Helen Zille's stance, where she suggested that reinstating Cilliers Brink was the only option for the DA to consider working with the ANC in other metros. The ANC made it clear that a "Brink or nothing" approach wasn’t going to cut it.

    Why the ANC Backs ActionSA

According to Bhengu-Motsiri, ActionSA, led by Herman Mashaba, didn’t impose the same hardline conditions that the DA did. Instead, ActionSA engaged in constructive dialogue, focusing on the qualities of the candidate and the urgent need to address the city's challenges. She highlighted the importance of collaboration and the need for all parties to work together for the greater good of the people of Tshwane.

“ActionSA leadership didn’t come to us with ultimatums. They took the time to explain that their proposal wasn’t a Nasiphi Moya or nothing scenario. After extensive discussions and considering the urgent timelines, the ANC agreed to support Dr. Moya, who has shown strong leadership during her interim role,” Bhengu-Motsiri stated.

    Mashaba Celebrates the Partnership

Herman Mashaba, the charismatic leader of ActionSA, couldn’t hide his excitement about the new alliance. He expressed his satisfaction with how things turned out and assured everyone that this partnership was all about delivering for the people of Tshwane.

“We’re thrilled with the support we’ve received from the ANC and EFF. We’re making a commitment to all the parties involved that under Dr. Moya’s leadership, service delivery will be directed to every community in Tshwane, ensuring no one is left behind,” Mashaba declared.

With the backing of the ANC and EFF, Mashaba feels confident about the outcome. It’s worth noting that ActionSA was previously in a coalition with the DA, but this new arrangement signals a shift in political alliances.

DA Stands Firm on Brink's Reinstatement

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance remains steadfast in its stance to nominate Cilliers Brink for the mayoral post again. However, their chances seem slim. The math is simple: the council has 214 seats, and a candidate needs at least 108 votes to secure the mayorship. Right now, the ANC, EFF, and ActionSA collectively control 117 seats, giving them a clear majority. Both Moya and Brink have been nominated, but the odds are heavily stacked in Moya’s favor.

ActionSA Steps Up with a Nominee

In related news, ActionSA officially nominated their candidate for the vacant mayoral position in Tshwane. This came after the DA's Cilliers Brink was removed from office due to a no-confidence motion. Despite their efforts, ActionSA faced criticism from some quarters, with detractors accusing them of being power-hungry and neglecting the needs of the people.
